FirstFlix Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is FirstFlix?
FirstFlix is a bogus application identical to AnyFlix, TopFlix and DNS Unlocker. This application falsely claims to provide a DNS service - "Using our DNS service, you can access U.S. restricted content." These claims are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimate software, however, be aware that this application often infiltrates systems without users’ permission.
In addition, this dubious application continually delivers intrusive online advertisements and collects various user/system data. For these reasons, FirstFlix is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
Once infiltrated, FirstFlix employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner, and other intrusive ads. The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any website visited and, thus, unwanted ads often conceal underlying content. Many users are unaware that these ads do not originate from their visited sites.
Display of content concealing advertisements significantly diminishes the web browsing experience. Furthermore, these ads can redirect to malicious websites and, thus, even accidental clicks could result in high-risk adware or malware infections. Another downside of FirstFlix is information tracking.
This application continually gathers various information that might be personally identifiable including IP addresses, website URLs visited, search queries, and other similar data The details are shared with third parties who misuse private data to generate revenue.
Therefore, data tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, you should uninstall FirstFlix adware immediately.
Adware-type programs are often very similar. Apps such as ArcadeIsle, Screenify, Booksearch2Go, and SysWeatherAlert also offer functionality that supposedly 'significantly improved the web browsing experience'. These claims are simply attempts to trick users to install.
Adware-type apps are designed only to generate revenue for developers and deliver no real value for users - they continually generate intrusive ads and record private data.
How did FirstFlix install on my computer?
FirstFlix is mostly distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular (usually legitimate) software.
Many users rush the download and installation processes. Aware of this, developers intentionally conceal PUPs within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings (which are often skipped by many users). This exposes systems to risk of various infections and compromises users' privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, be cautious during the download and installation processes. Closely analyze each step using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Furthermore, all offers to download/install additional apps should be declined. Bundled software is mostly rogue and, thus, should be cancelled.
