SysWeatherAlert Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is SysWeatherAlert?
SysWeatherAlert is a deceptive application that supposedly allows users to check local weather forecasts - "SysWeatherAlert - Get weather updates for your exact location". These false claims often trick users to install, however, this application usually infiltrates systems without permission.
In addition, SysWeatherAlert delivers intrusive online advertisements and continually monitors users' web browsing activity. For these reasons, it is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
Once infiltrated, SysWeatherAlert generates various intrusive online advertisements. These ads are delivered using 'virtual layer' (a tool enabling placement of third party graphical content on any site). Therefore, none originate from users' visited websites. Underlying content is mostly concealed, significantly diminishing the web browsing experience.
In addition, there is a high probability that these displayed advertisements will lead to malicious websites - clicking them risks further adware or malware infections. Another downside of SysWeatherAlert is data tracking.
This adware gathers various information that might be personally identifiable including IP addresses, website URLs, cookies, web beacons, and other gathered data that is shared with third parties. This private data is often misused to generate revenue.
Thus, having an information-tracking app installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For the above reasons, we strongly advise you to uninstall SysWeatherAlert immediately.
SysWeatherAlert Privacy Policy regarding information sharing:
We may use and share with third parties certain technical information (including IP addresses) or aggregated information to show general demographic and preference information among our users. We may also allow advertisers to collect technical or aggregated information, which they may share with us, with tracking technologies like cookies and web beacons. The information collected may be used to offer you targeted ad-selection and delivery in order to personalize your experience by ensuring that advertisements for products and services you see will appeal to you, a practice known as behavioral advertising, and to undertake web analytics.
This PUP is similar to hundreds of other adware-type programs. As with SysWeatherAlert, apps such as Monarimo, Booksearch2Go, and DNS Unlocker also claim to provide 'valuable functionality'. In fact, these claims are merely attempts to trick users to install.
Research shows that adware-type programs provide no real value for users - their purpose is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than improving the web browsing experience, these apps continually gather personal data and display intrusive advertisements.
How did SysWeatherAlert install on my computer?
Although SysWeatherAlert has an official download website, many users install this app inadvertently without their consent. This is due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of PUPs with other (usually legitimate) software.
Many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software. Therefore, developers hide all potentially unwanted programs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download or installation processes. Skipping this section often results in inadvertent installation of bogus apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Many PUPs are distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, it is important to closely analyze each step of the download/installation procedures. Select the 'Custom/Advanced' settings and cancel all third party apps listed for download or installation. Additionally-included programs are often rogue and should never be installed.
