Screenify Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Screenify?
Screenify is a bogus application that supposedly allows users to modify their screen lights and other desktop-related settings - "Screenify customizes your screenlight and it offers you the possibility to choose different desktop modes." Initially, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, Screenify usually infiltrates systems without users’ permission.
Following successful infiltration, Screenify continually monitors web browsing activity and delivers intrusive online advertisements. For these reasons, this app is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
Screenify records Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), browsing details, list of installed software, hardware specifications, and other similar data. This information is shared with cooperating third parties who misuse private data to generate revenue - behavior that can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
Another downside of this PUP is display of intrusive online advertisements. Screenify continually delivers various ads that often conceal visited website content. The types of generated ads include banners, pop-ups, etc.
By concealing website content, these advertisements diminish the web browsing experience. In addition, some redirect to malicious websites and, thus, clicking them is risky and can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Therefore, you should uninstall Screenify adware immediately.
This app shares many similarities with other adware-type programs such as SysWeatherAlert, Booksearch2Go, etc. Adware delivers fake promises to trick users to install. All falsely claim to enhance the web browsing experience. In fact, none of this rogue software provides any real value.
Applications such as Screenify are designed only to generate revenue for the developers - these apps simply monitor web browsing activity and generate intrusive online advertisements.
How did Screenify install on my computer?
This bogus program is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, many users install the app inadvertently. Developers of Screenify employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of PUPs with regular (usually legitimate) software.
Many users do not express enough caution during the download/installation processes. Aware of this, developers conceal PUPs within the 'Custom', or 'Advanced' settings, virtually guaranteeing successful infiltration. Users who skip this section, inadvertently install bogus apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Potentially unwanted programs are often distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, you should never rush the download or installation processes. Select the 'Custom/Advanced' settings, observe each step, and cancel all additionally-included programs. Bundled software is often dubious and, thus, should never be installed.
