TopFlix Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is TopFlix?
TopFlix is a dubious application that supposedly allows users to enter U.S. websites that are blocked in other countries - "Using our DNS service, you can access U.S. restricted content." By giving these fake promises, TopFlix gives the impression of legitimate and useful software.
In fact, this app usually installs without users’ permission, continually monitors browsing activity, and displays various intrusive online advertisements. For these reasons, it is classed as a potentially unwanted adware-type program (PUP).
TopFlix employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner and other intrusive advertisements. Ads displayed using the virtual layer do not originate from visited websites and conceal underlying content. This significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, it is highly probable that some of the displayed ads will lead to malicious websites - clicking them risks further high-risk adware or malware infections. As well as generating ads, TopFlix tracks Internet browsing activity by collecting IP addresses, geo-location, browser type, operating system, visited websites, and so on.
This collected data might contain personal details that developers of TopFlix share with third parties to generate revenue. Therefore, data-tracking apps such as TopFlix pose a direct threat to your privacy. We strongly advise you to uninstall this PUP immediately.
This bogus application is virtually identical to DNS Unlocker, DNS-Keeper, and a number of other PUPs. All are presented as legitimate and claim to provide valuable features, however, none deliver any real value for users. TopFlix, and other similar applications, are created only to generate revenue for the developers.
Rather than providing the functionality promised, they simply generate intrusive online advertisements and track Internet browsing activity.
How did TopFlix install on my computer?
Research shows that developers of TopFlix distribute this app using using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third party software with regular software/apps. Developers hide TopFlix within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download/installation processes.
By paying little attention when downloading and installing software, many users rush these processes and skip most/all steps - often leading to inadvertent installation of bogus programs. In doing so, they expose their systems to risk of further infection and put their privacy at risk.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The details regarding installation of PUPs are often concealed. For this reason, it is very important to closely observe each step of the download/installation processes. Select the the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, follow each step, and opt-out of all additionally-included programs. Bundled software is mostly rogue and, thus, should never be installed.
