Shoppingbuddy removal instructions
What is Shoppingbuddy?
Shoppingbuddy is a potentially unwanted browser plug-in claiming to save time and money by helping to compare products on shopping websites, displaying special deals, etc. - "Shoppingbuddy is a shopping assistance service designed to enhance your online shopping experience and help you compare prices, products and services while browsing through third party e-commerce websites. As you browse online shopping sites, Shoppingbuddy may detect the product or service you are browsing for and automatically present you with exclusive shopping offers that are relevant to you." Some users may find this functionality legitimate and useful, however, this app is categorized as adware. Once installed, Shoppingbuddy displays intrusive online advertisements and collects Internet browsing-related information.
This application employs a virtual layer to display various advertisements (coupons, in-text, etc.) The virtual layer allows developers to display third party content on any website visited. Some ads may open in new browser tabs/windows, thereby increasing the chance of inadvertent user clicks. The display of intrusive online ads significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience, since they conceal underlying website content and users must avoid clicking them. Furthermore, this app collects various Internet browsing-related information. Although the Privacy Policy of Shoppingbuddy states that this app collects no personally identifiable data, this is incorrect - details such as websites visited, pages viewed, activity on those pages, etc. are collected and may indeed contain private information. This data is later shared with third parties, and therefore, having an information-tracking app installed on your system will cause privacy issues. You are advised to uninstall Shoppingbuddy from your system immediately.
Shoppingbuddy Privacy Policy regarding information sharing:
We may, and you approve us to share or transfer information, including Personal Information, internally within our group of companies. We share Non-Personally Information with third parties, when this is required in order to provide, maintain or improve our services and operation.
As with regular adware, Shoppingbuddy is similar to many other apps of the same type including Top Deal Master, Kellystoys, Deal Barium, and PriceChomper. Although these apps claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience, none provide any real value. These claims are simply attempts to trick users to install. The purpose of adware-type applications is to generate revenue for the developers by displaying advertisements and sharing collected data with third parties.
How did Shoppingbuddy install on my computer?
Shoppingbuddy has an official download website, however, it is also distributed as a 'bundle' with regular (mostly free) software. Many users do not pay enough attention when downloading/installing software - by skipping steps (especially the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' section, where most PUPs are hidden), they install applications such as Shoppingbuddy inadvertently. The developers are concerned only with the amount of revenue generated (which is dependent on the number of apps distributed), and therefore, do not properly disclose installation of bogus apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Most freeware download websites demand the use of 'download apps' to download the chosen app. Some sites also provide a direct download link, which should be always be used in preference to any promoted download apps. If you must download via a download manager, follow each step and decline all offers to install additional apps. Furthermore, downloaded applications should be installed with the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any concealed apps listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. The key to computer safety is caution. Never rush the download/installation procedures and pay close attention to all steps.
