What is DealBarium?
The DealBarium bogus browser plug-in claims to save time and money while shopping online - "We cover hundreds of millions of products from dozens of online merchants. simply go to your favorite online store, search for your desired product and Deal Barium will locate a better deal for you."
Some users may find this functionality legitimate and useful, however, DealBarium is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). There are two main reasons for these negative associations. Firstly, Deal Barium usually installs without users' permission. Secondly, it displays intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
DealBarium displays many ads including banners, coupons, price comparison, etc. This is achieved by employing a virtual layer that allows placement of any graphical content on websites visited. Note that this content does not originate from the visited site.
Some ads are opened in new browser tabs or windows. When clicked, most redirect to e-commerce websites such as online stores, however, some may redirect users to untrusted websites - this situation can lead to further computer infections. Ads of this type diminish the Internet browsing experience by concealing underlying content.
Furthermore, DealBarium tracks various software and hardware Internet browsing-related information including IP addresses (to determine geographic locations), websites visited, search queries entered into the search engines, pages viewed, and so on.
This data may contain personally identifiable information that is later shared with third parties and be misused, thereby causing serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Deal Barium is a potential threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety - we strongly recommend that you uninstall this PUP immediately.
DealBarium Privacy Policy regarding information sharing:
The Company may collect certain information about your web usage and sites you have visited, which may be shared with third parties and used for advertising.
There are hundreds of PUPs similar to DealBarium including Linkey Deals, Great Find, and PriceChoper (just some examples of PUPs offering identical features). Claims to enhance the Internet browsing experience are merely attempts to trick users to install.
Neither Deal Barium, nor any of this other adware, provides any real value. The purpose of these applications is to generate revenue for the developers by displaying advertisements and collecting personally identifiable information.
How did DealBarium install on my computer?
The developers of DealBarium (Deal Barium Ltd) adware employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party apps together with regular software) to install this rogue app without users' consent. Since many users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software, bundling is an extremely effective method.
Users often rush the download and installation processes and skip most of the steps without realizing that rogue applications such as Deal Barium are hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. In doing so, users inadvertently install bogus apps.
The developers are concerned only with the amount of revenue generated (which relies on the volume of distributed adware), and therefore, they do not properly disclose installations.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of rogue applications can be avoided by closely analyzing each step of the free software download procedure and ensuring that only the chosen software is downloaded. Furthermore, all programs should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to cancel them.
