What is Bold Letters?
Developers of the Bold Letters browser plug-in (SuperWeb LLC) present it as a legitimate tool to improve the Internet browsing experience, since it supposedly enables various useful features such as coupons and comparison shopping. This functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, Bold Letters is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
The add-on is mostly distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'. This method is used to stealthily install third party applications when user installs regular software, and therefore, Bold Letters adware is often distributed together with free software downloadable on freeware download websites.
Following successful infiltration on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox), Bold Letters displays various intrusive online ads including pop-up, search, banner, interstitial, transitional, full-page, and other similar advertisement types.
Most of these ads redirect to rogue websites containing infectious content, and therefore, clicking them might cause further high-risk adware or malware infections.
Bold Letters adware puts users' privacy at risk, since it collects various Internet browsing-related information (some of which may be personally identifiable) including IP addresses, websites visited, search queries entered, pages viewed, unique identifier numbers, and other collected data.
Therefore, the presence of this adware on your system may cause serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Bold Letters is just one of hundreds of PUPs developed by SuperWeb LLC. This company releases identical browser extensions under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-spyware or anti-virus software.
WunderWeb, SearchFin, Higher Aurum, and other add-ons including Bold Letter, claim to enable various useful features, however, they provide no real value.
The purpose of Bold Letter and most adware-type applications, is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements and sharing collected data with third parties. Therefore, you are strongly advised to uninstall Bold Letters from your system immediately.
Popular freeware download websites such as download.com and soft32.com employ small 'download applications' to monetize their traffic and free services. These applications (also called 'download tools', 'download managers', 'download clients', 'installers', etc.) are developed to offer installation of third party apps together with the chosen software.
Although the developers present their software as '100% legitimate and virus-free', there is a high probability that careless download and installation of freeware will result in adware or malware infections. To avoid this situation, closely analyse the download process of any free software and uncheck all additionally-included programs.
Furthermore, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options during installation of downloaded programs - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. The following instructions will guide you through removal of the Bold Letters PUP from your system.
