SearchFin Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is SearchFin?
SearchFin is a deceptive application claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling various features such as coupons and comparison shopping. This browser extension may seem legitimate and useful, however, SearchFin is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The main reason for these negative associations is a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' used in SearchFin adware distribution. Bundling is stealth installation of third party apps together with regular software, and therefore, SearchFin adware often infiltrates Internet browsers (internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent.
Following successful infiltration, SearchFin generates intrusive online advertisements that mostly lead to bogus websites. These websites are likely to contain infectious content and clicking them exposes your system to risk of infection.
In addition, SearchFin gathers various Internet browsing-related information. Although most of this collected data (for example, IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, websites visited, search queries, and pages viewed) is related to software and hardware, some may contain personally identifiable details.
Therefore, having SearchFin adware installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
SearchFin is just one of many applications developed by SuperWeb LLC. Higher Aurum, Market Research Helper, and Intense Result are other examples from a long list of rogue applications released under different names by this company to prevent detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus suites.
All are presented as legitimate tools to enhance the Internet browsing experience, however, none provide any significant value. The purpose of PUPs such as SearchFin is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive ads and sharing collected data with third parties. You are strongly advised to uninstall SearchFin adware from your system immediately.
Analysis of SearchFin reveals that it is mainly distributed using small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as softonic.com and soft32.com.
Download clients supposedly ease the download process, however, they are employed by these websites' as free services and traffic monetization tools since they offer installation of third party applications together with the chosen software. Additional programs are sometimes hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options.
Although these promoted apps are described as 'completely virus-free', most are categorized as adware or malware. To avoid computer infections (such as SearchFin), closely inspect each step when downloading free software and ensure that no additional applications are included.
Additionally, installation of downloaded programs should be performed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options - this will reveal any third party apps listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If you have installed SearchFin, and you observe 'Ads by SearchFin', 'Powered by SearchFin', and 'SearchFin Deals' advertisements when browsing the Internet, follow the instructions below to uninstall this PUP from your sysem.
