DestinyGaze Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is DestinyGaze?
DestinyGaze is a deceptive application identical to GrizzlyQuiz and QuizCrystal. By falsely claiming to allow users to read horoscopes, solve various quizzes, and provide other similar features, DestinyGaze often tricks users to install. In fact, this app is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without users' consent; 2) display of intrusive online advertisements, and; 3) tracking of web browsing activity.
DestinyGaze employs a 'virtual layer' to display pop-up, banner, coupon, and other similar advertisements. The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying content of visited websites, significantly diminishing the web browsing experience.
In addition, some lead to malicious websites that contain infectious content. Therefore, even accidental clicks can result in high-risk computer infections. Furthermore, DestinyGaze records Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, and other similar data relating to users' web browsing activity.
This data might contain personally identifiable details that developers share with cooperating third party companies (who misuse private details to generate revenue). This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity and, therefore, DestinyGaze adware should be uninstalled immediately.
DestinyGaze is identical to the aforementioned apps and also shares many similarities with other potentially unwanted programs such as SultanArcade, Dealbeaver, VidSquare, etc. Research shows that all adware promises to enhance users' web browsing experience in certain ways, however, these claims are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimate software.
The real purpose of adware is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than providing any significant value for regular users, apps such as DestinyGaze collect personally identifiable information and deliver intrusive online advertisements.
How did DestinyGaze install on my computer?
Developers proliferate DestinyGaze via an official download website and using a deceptive software marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of third party applications with regular software). Many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software.
They rush and skip most/all steps. Aware of this, developers hide bundled programs within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of bogus software such as DestinyGaze.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of potentially unwanted programs can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, closely analyze download and installation processes using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Secondly, decline all offers to download/install additional programs. It is highly probable that bundled programs are bogus and, therefore, you should never install them.
