QuizCrystal Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is QuizCrystal?
Developers present QuizCrystal as a legitimate application that supposedly provides access to the latest horoscopes, various quizzes, and other similar features. These claims often trick users into believing that QuizCrystal is a legitimate and useful app, however, it is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
One of the main reasons for these negative associations is stealth installation - QuizCrystal often infiltrates systems without users' consent. Furthermore, this PUP gathers various information and continually delivers intrusive online advertisements.
QuizCrystal employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner, coupon, and other similar advertisements. The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, the ads often conceal underlying website content, thereby diminishing the web browsing experience.
Research also shows that they often redirect to malicious websites containing infectious content. Thus, clicking them risks further high-risk adware or malware infections. Another downside is information tracking. QuizCrystal continually records IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and various other data types relating to web browsing activity.
This information can include private details that developers share with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue. This can lead to serious privacy issues. You are strongly advised to remove QuizCrystal adware from your computer immediately.
There are hundreds of potentially unwanted programs that are virtually identical to QuizCrystal. Examples include OnlineApp, Music Player, GamesZing, MySafeSavings, and Social Extras. Note that all adware claims to enhance users' web browsing experience by providing certain functionality, however, these claims are merely attempts to trick users to install.
In fact, all adware is designed only to generate revenue for the developers. These applications provide no value for regular users. QuizCrystal, and other similar apps, collect personally identifiable information and deliver intrusive online advertisements.
How did QuizCrystal install on my computer?
Developers promote QuizCrystal via an official download website and a deceptive software marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular applications/software). Developers know that many users rush and skip most/all of the download and installation steps and hide bundled programs within the "Custom/Advanced" settings.
Rushing and skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of bogus programs such as QuizCrystal. Developers' revenue is dependent on the number of successful infiltrations and displayed ads and, therefore, these installations are never properly disclosed.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent system infiltration by potentially unwanted programs, be very cautious during the download/installation processes. Closely analyze each step using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. In addition, all offers to download and install third party applications should be declined.
There is a high probability that bundled applications will be rogue and, therefore, they should never be installed.
