What is ZiperFly?
Developers present ZiperFly as a great tool to compress and extract various files - "Zip and unzip your files instantly with Ziperfly , This all in one zip software lets you compress and unzip a number of key file formats."
Although ZiperFly may seem to be a useful application, it is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware, since it infiltrates Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' permission, displays intrusive online advertisements, and gathers various Internet browsing-related information.
ZiperFly employs a virtual layer to display a wide range of intrusive ads, none of which originate from the visited sites and conceal underlying website content. They significantly the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, some can redirect to bogus sites containing infectious content.
Thus, clicking them can lead to high-risk adware or malware infections. Another downside of this adware is data tracking. ZiperFly continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity and gathers various information that might be personally identifiable and later shared with third parties.
Therefore, the presence of ZiperFly on your system can lead to various privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall this PUP.
There are hundreds of adware-type applications with similar characteristics to ZiperFly including Catered to You, SaveDeals, WhiteWindow, and Treasure Truck. These apps offer different features, however, they have identical behavior. Adware-type apps give fake promises simply to trick users to install.
Once infiltration is successful, they merely display advertisements and collect personally identifiable information. Applications such as ZiperFly generate revenue for the developers and provide no real value for the users.
How did ZiperFly install on my computer?
As with other regular adware, ZiperFly is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third party programs with regular software/apps. Therefore, ZiperFly usually infiltrates systems without users' consent.
Developers hide their products within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings section in the knowledge that many users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software - they rush these processes and skip most/all steps, thereby inadvertently installing PUPs.
Developers are concerned only with the amount of revenue generated, which is dependent on the number of apps distributed. Thus, they do not properly disclose installation of rogue apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution - never rush when downloading and installing software. Select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings during these processes. Closely analyzing each step and declining third party applications will enable you to safely download and install the desired software.
