What is Treasure Track?
Created by SuperWeb LLC, Treasure Track is a deceptive application claiming to enhance the Internet browsing experience by displaying coupons, enabling comparison shopping, and other similar features - "We're passionate about improving web by providing the best tools to enhance the browsing experience, from searching the web to comparing online deals to find the best prices. We've combined all of our great ideas into the Treasure Track product suite, a FREE set of tools that work to make your browsing experience... better!"
Initially, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, Treasure Track is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP), since it usually infiltrates systems without users' permission, generates intrusive online advertisements, and tracks Internet browsing activity.
Treasure Track employs a virtual layer to display interstitial, transitional, full-page, pop-up, coupon, banner, search, and other similar advertisements. These advertisements do not originate from the visited sites and conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Most redirect to e-commerce websites offering certain services or selling various merchandise, however, some will redirect to bogus sites containing infectious content. For this reason, there is a high probability that clicking them will lead to further computer infections.
Furthermore, Treasure Track regularly tracks users' browsing activity. According to its Privacy Policy, Treasure Track collects information that is not personally identifiable.
This statement is false, since Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, visited websites, pages viewed, search queries, unique identifier numbers, and other similar types of data could indeed contain personal details (and these are later shared with third parties who can misuse it to generate revenue).
Thus, having Treasure Track installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly recommend that you uninstal this adware from your system.
Treasure Track Privacy Policy statement regarding data collection:
We only share or sell your non-public personal information with non-affiliated third parties when we believe doing so is permitted by you or authorized by this Privacy Policy. In addition, the Company may share your personal information with our parent, subsidiary or affiliate companies without restriction.
SuperWeb LLC has released hundreds of identical PUPs including Maximum Maker, High Stairs, and Oasis Space - these are just some examples.
All claim to improve the Internet browsing experience, however, all applications developed by this company are designed to generate revenue by displaying intrusive online ads (via the 'Pay Per Click' - PPC - advertising model) and collecting personal data (which is later sold to third party companies). The user receives no real value.
How did Treasure Track install on my computer?
Treasure Track is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of additional programs with regular software/apps. The developers are aware that most users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software, and thus, intentionally hide rogue applications within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.
Unaware of this, many users rush these processes, skip this section, thereby inadvertently installing applications such as Treasure Track and exposing their systems to risk of computer infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Pay close attention during download and installation of software. Closely analyze all steps, while opting-out of any additional programs.
To successfully perform safe download/installation, use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. The key to computer safety is caution - do not rush the download/installation processes.
