Super Great Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Super Great?
Super Great is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling features such as coupons, comparison shopping, etc.
- "We're passionate about improving web by providing the best tools to enhance the browsing experience, from searching the web to comparing online deals to find the best prices. We've combined all of our great ideas into the Super Great product suite, a FREE set of tools that work to make your browsing experience... better!"
These fake promises may trick some users into believing that Super Great is a legitimate and useful app, however, it is classed as adware. This PUP infiltrates systems without users' permission, displays intrusive online advertisements, and tracks Internet browsing activity.
The types of displayed ads include search, pop-up, interstitial, transitional, banner, and full-page. The developers of this adware (SuperWeb LLC) employ a virtual layer, which allows placement any graphical content on visited websites. The displayed ads do not originate from the visited sites - they conceal underlying content, thereby diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, some ads may lead to rogue sites, and thus, clicking them might cause further computer infections. Super Great gathers various Internet browsing-related information.
Although the Privacy Policy of this PUP states that the collected data is not personally identifiable, these claims are false, since Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic locations), unique identifier numbers, website URLs visited, search queries entered into search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.), pages viewed, and other collected data, may clearly contain private details.
SuperWeb LLC shares this information with third parties, and for this reason, the presence of Super Great adware on your system can lead to privacy issues. We strongly recommend that you uninstall this PUP immediately.
Super Great Privacy Policy statement regarding data collection:
We only share or sell your non-public personal information with non-affiliated third parties when we believe doing so is permitted by you or authorized by this Privacy Policy. In addition, the Company may share your personal information with our parent, subsidiary or affiliate companies without restriction.
There are hundreds of rogue adware-type browser extensions (for example, Gem Grab, Blazer Deals, Happy Cloud, and BetterBrowse) identical to Super Great. Be aware that SuperWeb LLC releases identical applications under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus suites.
Adware-type applications claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience, however, neither Super Great, nor any other of these other apps provide users with any useful features - their purpose is to generate revenue by displaying ads and collecting various user/system information.
How did Super Great install on my computer?
Super Great infiltrates systems using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third party apps with the chosen software.
Many users do not pay enough attention during the download and installation processes, thus, developers intentionally hide installation of bogus software within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Unaware of this, users often skip this section, thereby inadvertently installing third party software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Pay close attention during download and installation of any software. Both processes should be closely observed, and all offers to install additional applications, declined.
In addition, use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any concealed rogue applications listed for installation and enable you to opt-out. The key to computer safety is caution - the download and installation processes should never be rushed.
