What is Gem Grab?
Gem Grab is a regular adware-type application that claims to enhance the Internet browsing experience by displaying coupons and enabling features such as comparison shopping - "We're passionate about improving web by providing the best tools to enhance the browsing experience, from searching the web to comparing online deals to find the best prices.
We've combined all of our great ideas into the Gem Grab product suite, a FREE set of tools that work to make your browsing experience... better!" On initial inspection this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, Gem Grab is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The main reasons for this negative association are: stealth installation, display of intrusive online advertisements, and tracking of Internet browsing activity.
This adware employs a virtual layer that allows placement any graphical content on visited websites (in this case, intrusive ads). The generated advertisements may appear harmless, however, banner, pop-up, interstitial, transitional, search, and other types of ads might redirect to infectious sites, and therefore, clicking them can lead to further high-risk computer infections.
In addition, the ads conceal underlying website content, thereby diminishing the browsing experience. Gem Grab continually monitors Internet browsing activity and collects various user/system information.
Although the Privacy Policy of this adware states that collected data is not personally identifiable, this statement is false - IP addresses, visited sites, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar data collected may clearly contain private details.
This information is later shared with third parties, and thus, having Gem Grab installed on your system might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall Gem Grab from your system immediately.
Gem Grab Privacy Policy statement regarding data collection:
We only share or sell your non-public personal information with non-affiliated third parties when we believe doing so is permitted by you or authorized by this Privacy Policy. In addition, the Company may share your personal information with our parent, subsidiary or affiliate companies without restriction.
This PUP is not the only application developed by SuperWeb LLC. There are hundreds of adware-type apps identical to Gem Grab including, for example, Blazer Deals, Twinkle Star, Computer Pal, and Gravity Space.
As with Gem Grab, all claim to be legitimate, and yet, they provide no significant value for the user. All applications released by SuperWeb LLC are designed to generate revenue by displaying ads and collecting information.
How did Gem Grab install on my computer?
Applications developed by SuperWeb LLC are distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', and thus, they infiltrate systems without users' permissions.
Most users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software, and therefore, hiding installation of third party software within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings is very effective. Users are likely to skip this section, and by rushing the download and installation procedures, they expose their systems to risk of infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Pay close attention to all download and installation procedures. Express caution when downloading and installing any software - closely observe each step and decline all offers to install additional applications. Furthermore, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any concealed potentially unwanted programs and enable you to opt-out.
