First Color Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is First Color?
Created by SuperWeb LLC, First Color is a bogus browser plug-in claiming to enhance the Internet browsing experience by enabling various features such as comparison shopping and coupons. Some users may find this legitimate and useful functionality, however, this extension is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
A deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' is employed by the developers to distribute First Color, hence the reason for these associations. Bundling allows developers to distribute their applications together with users' chosen software.
Following installation of First Color on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, users will experience various intrusive online advertisements including banner, pop-up, interstitial, transitional, search, and full-page ads.
Be aware that advertisements generated by First Color adware often redirect to dubious websites containing infectious content, and therefore, your computer might become infected.
As with other adware-type apps, First Color collects various Internet browsing-related information. Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and unique identifier numbers are just some examples of information tracked by this adware - information that may contain personally identifiable details.
Therefore, the presence of First Color adware on your system can result in serious privacy issues or/and identity theft. Furthermore, the developers of this dubious plug-in (SuperWeb LLC) have released over two hundred identical extensions (including First Color).
This company releases identical add-ons under different names (for example, Checked List, Flying Deals, Screen Boost, and FlippyRoo) to avoid detection by legitimate anti-virus and anti-spyware suites.
No applications developed by SuperWeb LLC provide any real value for the user - their aim is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive ads and sharing collected data with third parties. You are strongly advised to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
Currently, most adware similar to First Color is distributed on freeware download websites, which often employ small programs called 'download managers' (also called 'installers', 'download clients', etc.) to monetize their traffic and free services.
Download managers supposedly ease the download process, however, they are developed to offer installation of third party applications together with the chosen software - or simply by hiding installation under the 'Custom' or either 'Advanced' options.
This third party software is commonly described as 'legitimate and virus free', however, reckless installation risks computer infection with adware or malware. To prevent such infections, pay close attention during the freeware download process and decline any offers to install additional programs.
Furthermore, whenever installing downloaded software, use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options - this will reveal any third party software listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If your system is infected with First Color adware, the instructions below will guide you through removal of this PUP from your system.
