How to remove RequestTop adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is RequestTop?
RequestTop is an adware-type application that has browser hijacker characteristics. It operates by delivering intrusive advertisement campaigns, making modifications to browsers, and promoting fake search engines. RequestTop promotes Safe Finder (via akamaihd.net) in this manner.
Additionally, most apps of this kind possess data tracking capabilities, which are used to track users' browsing habits. It is highly likely that RequestTop has this functionality as well. Due to the dubious tactics used to spread RequestTop, it is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Software classified as adware operates by enabling the placement of pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys and other intrusive advertisements, typically on any visited website. These ads significantly diminish the browsing experience, as they limit browsing speed and website visibility (they overlay page content).
When clicked, they can cause redirects to various untrusted/malicious web pages and some can even stealthily install rogue software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers assign the addresses of bogus search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs.
Therefore, new browser tabs/windows opened and each search query typed into the URL bar will redirect to the address of the fake search engine. RequestTop promotes Safe Finder through akamaihd.net in this manner.
These bogus search engines are typically unable to provide unique results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing and other genuine search engines.
Furthermore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removing the browser hijacker, since they can restrict/deny access to the settings and/or reset any permitted changes made. Most adware infections and browser hijackers can track data.
They can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This sensitive information is often shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
Therefore, the presence of unwanted software on devices can lead to system infections, financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

OdysseusLookup, SearchRange and BasicDesktop are some examples of other adware-type applications. They may seem legitimate and harmless, and users are often tempted into download/installation with a wide variety of "useful" functionalities. Despite how good these features may sound, they are usually nonoperational.
In fact, this applies to most PUAs. These unwanted applications have just one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs run intrusive ad campaigns, force-open dubious and malicious sites, hijack browsers and collect private data.
How did RequestTop install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling". Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the device.
Some PUAs have "official" download web pages. Intrusive ads also proliferate these applications. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Untrusted sources such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive and bundled content, and should therefore be avoided.
When downloading/installing, it is important to read the terms, explore all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive ads usually seem normal, however, they can redirect to highly dubious sites (e.g. pornography, gambling, adult-dating, and so on).
If you experience these advertisements/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with RequestTop, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
