How to uninstall OdysseusLookup adware from the operating system
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is OdysseusLookup?
OdysseusLookup is a rogue application classified as adware and possessing browser hijacker traits. Following successful installation, OdysseusLookup delivers intrusive ad campaigns, makes alterations to browser settings and promotes fake search engines.
Most adware type apps and browser hijackers collect browsing-relating information, and this is likely to include OdysseusLookup. Due to the dubious techniques used to proliferate this app, it is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
One of the methods used to distribute OdysseusLookup is via fake Adobe Flash Player updates. Note that bogus software updaters/installers are also used to spread Trojans, ransomware and other malware.
Adware enables the placement of pop-ups, coupons, surveys, banners and other intrusive advertisements, typically on any visited website. The delivered ads significantly diminish the browsing experience, since they limit website visibility and browsing speed.
Once clicked, intrusive ads redirect to dubious/malicious sites and can even stealthily download/install rogue software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers assign the addresses of fake search engines as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab/window URLs.
With this software installed, each new browser tab/window opened and search made via the URL bar redirects to the promoted address. Rogue search engines are seldom capable of generating unique results, and so they tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Yahoo, Google, Bing and other genuine sites.
Furthermore, any changes users attempt to make to their browsers are automatically reset, if access to the settings is permitted at all. Therefore, the only way of recovering an affected browser is by removing the browser hijacker. As mentioned, most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) have data tracking capabilities.
They can record users' browsing activity (URLs visited, web pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information derived from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data can be particularly sensitive and PUA developers often monetize it by sharing/selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
To summarize, the presence of unwanted apps on devices can lead to system infections, financial loss, serious privacy issues and identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, you are strongly advised to eliminate all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

DataSearchLauncher, VirtualDeskSearch and LookWebResults are some examples of other adware-type apps. They may seem legitimate and useful, often tempting users into download/installation with offers of various functionalities. Despite how good these features may sound, they are rarely operational.
In fact, this is true of all PUAs. The only purpose of these unwanted applications is to generate revenue for the developers, whilst regular users receive no real value and can instead experience serious problems. PUAs run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects and collect private data.
How did OdysseusLookup install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed via the download/installation set-ups of other software. "Bundling" is the term used to define this deceptive marketing tactic of pre-packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions.
Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. skipping steps and sections, using pre-set options, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system. Some PUAs have "official" download sites. Intrusive ads proliferate these applications as well. When clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are strongly advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Untrusted sources such as unofficial and free-file hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and third party downloaders can offer deceptive and bundled content.
Download and installation processes must be treated with caution. Read the terms, study all available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive ads may seem normal, however, they can redirect to dubious pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on).
If you encounter these advertisements/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with OdysseusLookup, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
