How to remove the IncognitoNow browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is IncognitoNow?
IncognitoNow is rogue software endorsed as a tool capable of increasing browsing privacy, security, and preventing tracking attempts. It is classified as a browser hijacker, due to the modifications it makes to browsers to promote incognitonow.com (a fake search engine).
Additionally, IncognitoNow has data tracking capabilities itself and employs them to monitor users' browsing activity. Due to the dubious techniques used to proliferate IncognitoNow, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Popular browsers with large user bases such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are common targets of browser hijackers. Following successful infiltration, this software reassigns the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of bogus search engines.
IncognitoNow promotes incognitonow.com in this manner. Therefore, with this browser hijacker installed, each new browser tab/window opened and each search made via the URL bar redirects to incognitonow.com.
Fake search engines are usually unable to provide unique results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing and other legitimate sites. The web searcher of IncognitoNow (incognitonow.com) is no exception to this, and simply redirects to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com).
To recover an affected browser, it is necessary to remove the browser hijacker, since access to the browser settings can be restricted/denied and any changes made are reset.
As mentioned, IncognitoNow can track data. It can monitor users' browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data can be particularly sensitive and, furthermore, developers often share/sell it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
Therefore, the presence of data-tracking software on browsers/systems can lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To protect device and user safety, you are strongly advised to eliminate all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

SportStreamSearch, NanoSearch, WebSecurerr, My Learning Buddy, and Searches Central are some examples of other browser hijackers. They may seem legitimate and harmless, and users are often enticed into download/installation with offers of various "useful" functionality, however, these features are seldom operational.
In fact, this information is true of most PUAs. The only purpose of these unwanted applications is to generate profit for the developers. Regular users receive no real value and can instead experience serious issues. PUAs hijack browsers, cause unwanted redirects, deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns and gather private information.
How did IncognitoNow install on my computer?
Some PUAs (including IncognitoNow) have "official" promotional web pages from which they can be downloaded. These apps are also distributed through download/installation set-ups of other software. "Bundling" is the term used to define this deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions.
Rushing downloads/installations (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system. Intrusive ads proliferate such applications as well. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Untrusted channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive and bundled content.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, explore all possible options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem normal, however, they can redirect to highly dubious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
If you experience ads/redirects of this type, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with IncognitoNow, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
