How to uninstall the My Learning Buddy browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is My Learning Buddy?
The My Learning Buddy app supposedly provides quick access to various learning and skills-building websites. In fact, its main purpose is to promote hp.hmylearningbuddy.co (or search.hmylearningbuddy.co), the address of a fake search engine, by changing certain browser settings.
Browser hijackers also gather data. These apps are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs), since users often download and install them inadvertently. Note that My Learning Buddy is distributed with another PUA called Hide My History.
My Learning Buddy promotes hp.hmylearningbuddy.co (or search.hmylearningbuddy.co) by forcing users to visit this address when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar. It achieves this by assigning hp.hmylearningbuddy.co (or search.hmylearningbuddy.co) as the address of the homepage, default search engine and new tab.
Note that hp.hmylearningbuddy.co/search.hmylearningbuddy.co is classified as a fake search engine, since it displays results generated by Yahoo (redirects users to search.yahoo.com). Most browser hijackers do not allow removal of the fake search engine from the settings, unless the rogue program is uninstalled.
In this case, hp.hmylearningbuddy.co (or search.hmylearningbuddy.co) can be removed from the settings only when My Learning Buddy is no longer installed. Browser hijackers also monitor and record browsing data. For example, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, IP addresses, and geolocations.
Some PUAs collect private, sensitive details as well. The information is misused to generate revenue by selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals), or in other ways.
Therefore, having apps such as My Learning Buddy (Hide My History, and other apps of this type) installed on the browser and/or operating system can cause problems relating to online privacy, browsing safety, and even identity theft.

NanoSearch, WebSecurerr and VidSearch are PUAs that are also classified as browser hijackers, however, these are just some examples from many more. Typically, these apps are advertised as useful and legitimate - they supposedly improve the browsing experience, include various features, provide quick access to popular sites, etc.
In fact, browser hijackers are designed only to promote fake search engines and collect data. Therefore, remove all PUAs including hijackers from browsers and operating systems immediately.
How did My Learning Buddy install on my computer?
People often download and install PUAs through deceptive advertisements that are capable of executing certain scripts, however, these apps also infiltrate together with other programs. I.e., when PUAs are included into the download/installation set-ups of other programs as 'additional offers'.
This distribution method is known as "bundling". Typically, additionally-included apps are listed (and can be declined) in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings. When users download and install their programs without checking and changing these settings, they often give PUAs permission to also be downloaded and installed.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to download programs and files only from official pages and via direct download links. Other tools/channels such as third party downloaders and installers, unofficial pages, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., eMule, torrent clients) are often used to distribute unwanted, potentially malicious software.
Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings, and decline offers to download or install additionally-included, unwanted apps. Do not click intrusive ads that appear on dubious sites, since they can open potentially malicious websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any unwanted, suspicious extensions, plug-ins and add-ons installed on the browser, and software of this kind installed on the computer. If your computer is already infected with My Learning Buddy, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
