How to uninstall ProgressStart adware from the operating system
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is ProgressStart?
ProgressStart is a rogue application classified as adware. It delivers intrusive ad campaigns. Additionally, ProgressStart possesses browser hijacker traits such as browser modification and fake search engine promotion. This app promotes Safe Finder through the akamaihd.net website.
Since most users download/install ProgressStart unintentionally, it is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA). Most PUAs track browsing-related information, and it is highly likely that ProgressStart also has these capabilities.
Adware enables the placement of various intrusive ads (e.g. pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, etc.) on any visited website. These significantly diminish the browsing experience, as they limit browsing speed and overlay web page content.
Furthermore, when clicked, intrusive advertisements redirect to untrusted/malicious sites and can even execute scripts to stealthily download/install rogue software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers operate by assigning the addresses of bogus search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs.
Therefore, with a browser hijacker installed, each search query typed into the URL bar and each new browser tab/window opened redirects to the promoted address. In the case of ProgressStart, redirects are made to Safe Finder via akamaihd.net.
Fake search engines are usually unable to provide unique results, and so they redirect to Google, Yahoo, Bing and other legitimate sites. Recovering an affected browser, without removal of the software affecting it, is impossible, since access to browser settings is restricted/denied and any permitted changes made, automatically reset.
Most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) have data tracking capabilities, and this is likely to include ProgressStart. These unwanted apps can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details).
This vulnerable data is typically monetized by PUA developers through sharing it with third parties seeking to misuse it for profit. To summarize, the presence of PUAs on systems can lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

Adware-type applications may seem legitimate and harmless - BufferKey, BoostSelect and SearchExplore are some examples of software that may seem useful. People are often tempted into download/installation with offers of "useful" features, however, these functions are rarely operational, and this is common to most PUAs.
The only purpose of these unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs run intrusive advertisement campaigns, force-open untrusted/malicious websites, modify browsers and collect private data.
How did ProgressStart install on my computer?
PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other products. "Bundling" is the term used to define this deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing normal software with unwanted or malicious additions. When downloading/installing, ignoring terms, using presets, and skipping steps and sections, increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content onto the device.
Some PUAs have "official" download web pages. Once clicked, intrusive ads can execute scripts to download/install PUAs, without users' consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
All products should be researched before download/installation. Download only from official and verified channels. Sources such as unofficial and free file-hosting sites, P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders are untrusted, as they commonly offer deceptive and/or bundle content.
Treat download and installation processes with caution. It is important to read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features and other additions. Intrusive ads may seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to various dubious websites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
If you encounter these advertisements/redirects, check the system and immediately remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with ProgressStart, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
