Search.bunnybarny.com Redirect (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is search.bunnybarny.com?
search.bunnybarny.com is one of many fake search engines that is promoted through a variety of browser hijacking applications/installers. For example, the File Compressor Pro unwanted app.
Note that search.bunnybarny.com is very similar to many other search engines of this type such as search.pogypog.com, search.yadbazelet.com, and searchv.dooryov.com. Browser hijackers that promote these sites change browser settings and collect various information relating to users' browsing activities.
Browser hijacker apps usually target browsers such as Safari, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. After installation, they change browser settings. In this case, the default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL are assigned to search.bunnybarny.com.
People who have browsers hijacked by Bunnybarny are forced to visit search.bunnybarny.com when they open the browser, new tab, or enter a search query into the URL bar. Typically, the only way to undo changes made by these apps is to uninstall them. Furthermore, search.bunnybarny.com deliver no unique search results, but redirects users to search.yahoo.com.
Therefore, it provides people with results generated by the Yahoo search engine. Information tracking is another reason to avoid browser hijackers and fake search engines. They collect IP addresses, geolocations, URLs of visited websites, entered search queries, and other information relating to users' browsing habits.
They might also gather personal details. Developers send all recorded information to other parties who misuse it to generate revenue. Note, some of these third parties might be cyber criminals. In summary, people who use these apps and search engines risk issues with browsing safety, privacy, or even identity theft.

Fake search engines may seem to be useful tools to browse the Internet, however, they provide no unique results and are useless. Furthermore, most collect information for their developers, which could be misused to generate revenue.
How did search.bunnybarny.com install on my computer?
In most cases, people download/install unwanted apps inadvertently. This is since they are promoted using the "bundling" method. Developers bundle PUAs with other software download/installation set-ups and do not disclose this information properly.
They hide bundled apps in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar parts of the set-ups and hope that people will not check them, and thus give permission for PUAs to be downloaded/installed by default.
In other cases, people cause unwanted downloads/installations by clicking deceptive (intrusive) advertisements. If clicked, some ads run scripts designed to download and install unwanted apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Avoid using third party software downloaders, eMule, torrent clients (or other Peer-to-peer networks), unofficial websites and other similar, untrustworthy channels. The only safe way to download software is using official websites and direct download links.
Do not download or install programs without checking options included in the set-ups - check all "Custom", "Advanced", "Manual" settings and opt-out of offers to install PUAs. Avoid clicking intrusive ads, especially on untrustworthy, dubious websites.
These might cause unwanted downloads/installations or redirects to malicious pages. If you encounter intrusive ads or unwanted redirects, check the list of installed browser applications and remove any unwanted extensions, plug-ins, and add-ons. This also applies to unwanted programs installed on the operating system.
If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
