Hosts Ads

What is hosts?
'hosts' is a deceptive application that stealthily infiltrates computers during installation of other applications. Following successful infiltration, hosts generates various intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity. For these reasons, this app is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
This rogue application employs a 'virtual layer' to deliver pop-up, coupon, banner, and other similar advertisements. None originate from users' visited websites, and often conceal underlying content, significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, displayed ads might redirect to malicious websites. Clicking them is risky and can result in further high-risk adware or malware infections. In addition, hosts tracks users' Internet browsing activity by gathering various data that might be personally identifiable.
Examples include IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, and search queries entered into search engines (for example, Google, Bing,Yahoo, etc.) The data is shared with third parties who cooperate with hosts' developers. These third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) often attempt to generate revenue by misusing user data.
This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Therefore, we strongly advise you to uninstall hosts adware immediately.
hosts is regular adware and, therefore, shares many similarities with other adware-type applications such as Best Results, MySafeSavings, Provider, adsupply (Tatami Solutions), etc.
Be aware that adware-type programs often deliver fake promises (of enhancing the Internet browsing experience by providing a number of 'useful features'), however, these claims are merely attempts to trick users to install. Research shows that the purpose of all adware-type applications is to generate revenue for the developers.
Most do not enable any of the functions promised. Adware simply collects personally identifiable information, delivers intrusive online advertisements, and causes unwanted browser redirects.
How did hosts install on my computer?
Developers employ a deceptive software marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software.
Research shows that many users rush the download/installation processes and skip most steps. Therefore, apps such as hosts are often concealed within the "Custom/Advanced" settings. Rushing and skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of bogus programs. This behavior can result in high-risk computer infections and/or serious privacy issues.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of potentially unwanted programs can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, never rush when downloading/installing apps - select the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each step. Secondly, decline all offers to download/install third party applications and opt-out those already included.
There is a high probability that bundled applications will be rogue and, therefore, bundled software should never be installed.
