What is .loptr?
.loptr is a new variant of a ransomware-type virus called Locky and identical to Odin, Zepto, Osiris, and other variants of the same malware. Research shows that .loptr is distributed via spam emails (Zip attachment containing malicious DOC, JS, or WSF files, which, once executed, download the ransomware).
Following infiltration, .loptr encrypts various data using AES-1024 and RSA-2048 cryptographies. This variant also renames encrypted files using the "[8_random_characters]-[4_random_characters]-[4_random_characters]-[8_random_characters]-[12_random_characters].loptr" pattern (for example, "sample.jpg" might be renamed to something similar to "KGA04L3O-GKM4-LG84-10LPHKJ4-MNTLFO49FL04.loptr").
Then, .loptr changes the desktop wallpaper and creates an HTML file, placing it on the desktop wallpaper.
What is CloudExtender?
CloudExtender is a rogue application that stealthily infiltrates systems without permission (the "bundling" method).
