Aurora Browser Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Aurora Browser?
Aurora is a dubious application claiming to be a web browser that supposedly blocks intrusive online advertisements, saves time and money while shopping online (providing coupons/enabling comparison shopping), enables translation functionality, and so on.
These false claims often trick users into believing that Aurora is a legitimate application. In fact, it is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware. This program infiltrates systems without users’ permission and tracks Internet browsing activity. Rather than blocking advertisements, Aurora browser actually generates them.
Aurora employs a 'virtual layer' to generate coupon, pop-up, banner, and other similar advertisements that do not originate from users' visited websites. Third party ads often conceal visited website content, significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, the displayed ads often lead to untrusted websites containing malicious content - clicking them causes further high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, Aurora records Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), search queries entered into search engines, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar information relating to Internet browsing activity.
This data might contain personal details that are shared with third parties who misuse private information to generate revenue. Thus, the presence of a data-tracking application such as Aurora on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly advise that you uninstall the Aurora browser immediately.
There are many deceptive web browsers falsely claiming to enhance the Internet browsing experience including, for example, Shield+, BrowserAir, and Kometa. By giving fake promises to enable valuable functionality, applications such as Aurora often aim to trick users to install.
Be aware, however, that these programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers and are useless for users. Rather than enabling the features promised, Aurora, and other similar applications, cause unwanted browser redirects, gather private information, and deliver intrusive online advertisements.
How did Aurora Browser install on my computer?
Research shows that although Aurora has an official download website, many users install this app without their consent. This is often due to users not paying enough attention when downloading and installing programs.
Developers employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of PUPs with regular software) and hide additional programs within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings of the download/installation processes. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution, since rogue installation of PUPs is mostly concealed. Select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings when downloading or installing software. Carefully observe each step and opt-out of all additionally-included programs, since third party apps are mostly bogus.
