SuperPricer Adware (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is SuperPricer?
SuperPricer is a deceptive browser extension that supposedly improves the online shopping experience by displaying special deals and alternative products on various online shops.
These claims often trick users into believing that SuperPricer is legitimate, however, due to its rogue behavior (stealth installation, tracking of Internet browsing activity, and display of intrusive advertisements), SuperPricer is classed as a potentially unwanted adware-type program (PUP).
This potentially unwanted program gathers IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar browsing-related data. Bear in mind that some of this recorded data can be personally identifiable. Furthermore, it is shared with third parties who often misuse personal data to generate revenue.
Thus, SuperPricer poses direct a threat to your privacy. SuperPricer employs a 'virtual layer' to deliver coupon, pop-up, banner, and other similar advertisements. None originate from visited websites and, therefore, often conceal underlying content. Furthermore, some ads generated by SuperPricer lead to untrusted sites.
It is highly probable that some of these sites will contain malicious content - clicking them is risky and may lead to further adware or malware infections. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall SuperPricer immediately.
Research results show that SuperPricer is very similar to Offerz4U, DealTop, ShopperPro, and hundreds of other adware-type programs. Although all claim to improve the Internet browsing experience, none deliver any real value for users. Adware-type programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
Apps such as SuperPricer generate intrusive advertisements and collect personally identifiable data.
How did SuperPricer install on my computer?
SuperPricer is mostly distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software. Many users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software - they rush these processes and skip most/all steps.
Aware of this, developers conceal PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Never rush the download or installation processes. Closely analyze these procedures using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Furthermore, opt-out of all third party software listed for download/installation, since bundled programs are often malicious.
