KeyPlayer Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is KeyPlayer?
KeyPlayer is a dubious application claiming to provide various video-related features such as downloading and bookmarking - "Whether you want a media player to play videos, download and bookmark videos from the web, or you want to convert the format of a video, Keyplayer does it all. Start building your video collection today - download the latest version of the Basic Player for free!"
These fake promises often trick users into believing that KeyPlayer is a legitimate program. Due to its rogue behavior (stealth infiltration, tracking of Internet browsing activity, display of intrusive online advertisements, etc.), KeyPlayer is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
KeyPlayer records IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other Internet browsing-related data. Initially, this information might seem insignificant, however, it may contain personally identifiable details. This gathered information is shared with third parties who are likely to misuse personal data to generate revenue.
Tracking of personally identifiable information can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Furthermore, KeyPlayer employs a 'virtual layer' to generate various intrusive online advertisements. These do not originate from users' visited websites and, by concealing underlying web page content, significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, there is a high probability that some ads will redirect to malicious sites. Users are forced to avoid clicking them, since the malicious sites are likely to contain infectious content. In fact, clicking any advertisements generated by KeyPlayer might cause further adware or malware infections.
If you are concerned with your privacy and Internet browsing safety, you should uninstall KeyPlayer immediately.
There are tens of potentially unwanted programs with similar characteristics to KeyPlayer. All adware falsely claims to improve the Internet browsing experience simply to trick users to install. The actual purpose of apps such as eDealMan, Shopping Optimizer, and KeyPlayer is to generate revenue for the developers.
They are designed only to display intrusive advertisements and gather various browsing-related data, providing no real value for users.
How did KeyPlayer install on my computer?
Most users are unaware that potentially unwanted programs such as KeyPlayer are often distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of bogus software with regular software/apps). They rush the download and installation processes, and skip virtually all steps.
For this reason, developers conceal bogus apps such as KeyPlayer within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. In this way, many users install these applications inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. The download and installation processes should be performed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options. Closely analyze each step and opt-out of all additionally-included programs, since there is a high probability that bundled software will be infectious.
