Candle Jar Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Candle Jar?
According to the developers (SuperWeb LLC), Candle Jar significantly improves Internet browsing by delivering coupons, special deals/discounts available on various online stores, and enabling functions such as comparison shopping - "We're passionate about improving web by providing the best tools to enhance the browsing experience, from searching the web to comparing online deals to find the best prices. We've combined all of our great ideas into the Candle Jar product suite, a FREE set of tools that work to make your browsing experience... better!"
Although this application may seem legitimate and useful, Candle Jar is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware. Candle Jar stealth installs without users' consent, generates intrusive online advertisements, and gathers information relating to users' Internet browsing activity.
Be aware that information gathered by this app (IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, search queries entered into search, websites visited, pages viewed, etc.) might be personally identifiable. SuperWeb LLC shares this gathered data with third party companies who can misuse personal details to generate revenue.
Therefore, the presence of Candle Jar on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Candle Jar generates pop-up, interstitial, transitional, full-page, banner, coupon, search, and other similar intrusive online ads. To achieve this, developers use a 'virtual layer', which enables placement of third party graphical content on any visited web pages.
None of the generated ads originate from users' visited websites. By concealing underlying web content, these advertisements significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience.
Some redirect to malicious sites that are likely to contain infectious content and, thus, clicking ads displayed by Candle Jar is risky and may cause further adware or malware infections. For these reasons, you should uninstall Candle Jar adware immediately.
Candle Jar Privacy Policy statement regarding data collection:
We only share or sell your non-public personal information with non-affiliated third parties when we believe doing so is permitted by you or authorized by this Privacy Policy. In addition, the Company may share your personal information with our parent, subsidiary or affiliate companies without restriction.
Candle Jar is not the only application developed by SuperWeb LLC. This company has released several hundred identical PUPs. SuperWeb LLC intentionally releases identical PUPs under different names to prevent detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus suites.
All claim to improve the Internet browsing experience, however, Candle Jar and other applications designed by this company (for example, Outrageous Deal, Search Know, and Primary Color) simply generate intrusive online advertisements and collect personally identifiable information. They are designed solely to generate revenue for the developers and provide no real value for users.
How did Candle Jar install on my computer?
All adware developed by SuperWeb LLC is distributed as a 'bundle' with other software. Developers hide bundled applications within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, since they are aware that many users skip this section.
By rushing the download and installation processes, users often install potentially unwanted programs inadvertently, thereby exposing their systems to risk of further infection and compromising their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps you should take to prevent installation of adware-type programs. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - perform these processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Secondly, opt-out of all bundled software, since third party apps are often infectious.
