GetLucky Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is GetLucky?
GetLucky is a deceptive application claiming to save time and money by generating coupons, displaying special deals/discounts available on various online stores, enabling price comparison, and other similar features - "GetLucky will find coupon codes and automatically apply them to your order. GetLucky does the work. You get the savings."
Many users believe that this application is legitimate and useful, however, GetLucky generates intrusive online advertisements and collects various Internet browsing-related data and is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). Note that this application often infiltrates systems without users’ permission.
GetLucky employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, coupon, banner, and other similar intrusive ads. The virtual layer enables placement of third party content on any site, and therefore, none of these generated ads originate from your visited websites. By concealing website content, advertisements generated by GetLucky significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, some redirect to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and may cause further adware or malware infections. GetLucky records various types of software and hardware information relating to users' Internet browsing activity including, for example, IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, etc.
There is a high probability that some of this collected information will contain personally identifiable details that are shared with third parties who are likely to misuse them to generate revenue. Thus, having GetLucky installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, you should eliminate GetLucky adware immediately.
GetLucky Privacy Policy towards information sharing:
We may share your information with affiliates and trusted third party partners in ways including the following:
to help operate our website or browser extension; and
to serve you advertisements, offers or marketing opportunities.
There are hundreds of other PUPs that are virtually identical to GetLucky. For instance, Astro Find, Video Tile, Discover Treasure, and TruNavi also claim to save time and money. In fact, these applications display intrusive online advertisements and collect personally identifiable information.
Be aware that all adware-type applications are designed to generate revenue for the developers - users receive no real value.
How did GetLucky install on my computer?
Although GetLucky has an official download website, many users install this application against their will. This is due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', which is used to distribute this adware. Bundling is stealth installation of third party apps with regular software/apps.
Many users are unaware that rogue applications are often hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' download/installation settings. By skipping this section, they inadvertently install potentially unwanted programs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Bear in mind that adware-type applications are often concealed and, thus, you should never rush when downloading and installing software. Closely analyze these processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Research shows that most bundled software is rogue, and therefore, you should never accept any offers to download or install third party apps.
