What is Olive?
Olive claims to be a legitimate light-weight Internet browser that significantly improves the Internet browsing experience. Many users believe that this application legitimate, however, Olive is a potentially unwanted adware-type program (PUP) that infiltrates systems without users’ permission.
Following successful infiltration, this bogus app generates intrusive online advertisements and gathers Internet browsing-related information.
Olive generates various types of intrusive online advertisements including banner and pop-up ads. To achieve this, developers employ a 'virtual layer' (a tool allowing placement of third party graphical content on any visited web pages), and thus, none of these ads originate from the visited sites.
Third party advertisements conceal underlying web content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, some redirect to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and may lead to further adware or malware infections.
Olive continually tracks users' Internet browsing activity and collects various software and hardware information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc. This information might contain personal details that is shared with third party companies who can misuse it to generate revenue.
Thus, having Olive adware installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall this adware immediately.
There are many applications with similar behavior to Olive adware. For example, BrowserSafer, Emotypecon, MusicOptimizerLab, and Fresh Outlook also claim to enable valuable functions. These false claims are merely attempts to trick users to install.
After infiltrating the system, these applications simply track personal data and generate intrusive online advertisements. The purpose of adware-type applications is to generat revenue for the developers. Users receive no real value.
How did Olive install on my computer?
This adware is mostly distributed as a 'bundle' with other software. The bundling method is essentially stealth installation of additional software with the chosen software/apps.
Developers intentionally hide rogue applications within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, since they are aware that many users rush when downloading and installing software. The problem is that users often do not expect that rogue apps will be concealed - they skip most/all steps, resulting in inadvertent installation of third party software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Bear in mind that adware-type applications usually infiltrate the system during download or installation of other software, and therefore, you should be attentive during these processes. Select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical'. This will reveal any third party software listed for download/installation and allow you to opt-out.
