What is Emotypecon?
The Emotypecon application supposedly allows users to place various emoticons within their written text - "Tons of emoticons that you can introduce in text! With this soft you can have access to the latest emoticons."
Some users may believe that this functionality is legitimate and useful, however, Emotypecon is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). This application is identical to PackEditorTools, Games Desktop, and MobilePCStarterKit.
Following successful infiltration, Emotypecon generates intrusive online advertisements and continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity.
This adware collects Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar browsing-related data. This information is shared with cooperating third party companies. Data collected by adware-type applications such as Emotypecon often contains personally identifiable details.
There is a high probability that third parties will misuse personal data to generate revenue, and therefore, the presence of Emotypecon on your system may lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Another downside of this adware is display of intrusive online advertisements.
Emotypecon employs a 'virtual layer' to deliver in-text, banner, coupon, and a number of other advertisement types. The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content, and thus, no advertisements generated by this PUP originate from the visited websites.
By concealing website content, the advertisements generated by Emotypecon diminish the browsing experience. Furthermore, some redirect to various malicious sites containing infectious content - clicking them is risky and will cause further adware or malware infections. You are strongly advised to uninstall Emotypecon immediately.
Although Emotypecon is identical to the above adware apps, it has similar characteristics to other PUPs also claiming to enhance the Internet browsing experience including, for example, ScrollUp, BrowserAir, and Get-a-Clip. All adware claims to provide useful features, however, none provides any real value for users.
This type of application is designed to generate revenue for the developers - rather than enabling the functionality promised, apps such as Emotypecon generate intrusive online advertisements (via the 'Pay Per Click’ [PPC] advertising model) and gather personal data (which is later sold to third parties).
How did Emotypecon install on my computer?
Emotypecon has an official download website, however, most users install this application inadvertently. The developers employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to distribute Emotypecon. Bundling is stealth installation of third party applications with the chosen (mostly free) software/apps.
Many users are unaware that rogue applications such as Emotypecon are usually hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By rushing these processes and skipping most steps, users inadvertently install potentially unwanted adware-type programs, expose their systems to risk of further infections, and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This situation can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - perform these processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings and closely analyze each step. Secondly, opt-out of all additionally-included applications, since bundled software is mostly bogus.
