What is DownloaderPlus?
DownloaderPlus is presented as a legitimate application allowing users to manage their downloads - "Sporting a user-friendly interface, Downloader Plus will let you manage all your downloads from one window."
On initial inspection, DownloaderPlus may seem a legitimate application, however, be aware that it is classed as a potentially unwanted adware-type application that infiltrates systems without users' permission. In addition, DownloaderPlus tracks Internet browsing activity and displays intrusive online advertisements.
This app gathers Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.), and other similar browsing-related data. Once recorded, this information (some of which might be personally identifiable) is shared with third parties who can misuse it to generate revenue.
Thus, the presence of this information tracking application on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. In addition, DownloaderPlus employs a 'virtual layer' to display pop-up, banner, coupon, and other similar ads.
The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any site, and hence, none of the displayed ads originate from your visited web pages. By concealing underlying content, these advertisements significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, some redirect to malicious sites, and thus, accidental clicks on them may lead to high-risk adware or malware infection. We strongly recommend that you uninstall DownloaderPlus adware immediately.
There are hundreds of potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) with similarities to DownloaderPlus adware. For instance, MusicOptimizerLab, Get-a-Clip, and ScrollUp also offer useful features, and yet, none (including DownloaderPlus) provide the functionality promised.
Adware-type programs are designed to generate revenue for the developers and deliver no real value for users. They track personally identifiable information (which is later sold to third party companies) and deliver intrusive online advertisements (using the 'Pay Per Click’ [PPC] advertising model).
How did DownloaderPlus install on my computer?
The developers employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party apps with the chosen software/apps) as one of the main distribution techniques. For this reason, DownloaderPlus often infiltrates systems without users' permission.
Many users are unaware that rogue applications are often hidden within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings. By rushing the download and installation processes, they commonly install applications such as DownloaderPlus inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of adware-type applications such as DownloaderPlus can be prevented by closely analyzing each step of the download and installation processes. Be attentive and select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' download/installation settings - this will reveal any hidden PUPs and allow you to cancel them.
