Ads by ScrollUp

What is ScrollUp?
ScrollUp is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to allow the use of keyboard arrow functions via the mouse wheel - "ScrollUp - Use the arrow keys using scroll wheel". At first glance, ScrollUp may seem a legitimate and useful application, however, this application is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
One of the main reasons for these negative associations is stealth installation - ScrollUp infiltrates systems without users' consent, displays intrusive online advertisements, and tracks Internet browsing activity.
The types of advertisements generated by ScrollUp include banner, pop-up, and other similar ads. These usually redirect users to various e-commerce sites such as online stores, however, some might redirect users to malicious sites containing infectious content. Therefore, clicking them is risky and may cause further adware or malware infections.
Note that all advertisements are displayed using a 'virtual layer' - a tool allowing placement of third party graphical content on any visited sites. None of the ads originate from users' visited sites and conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, users' browsing activity is continually monitored, since ScrollUp collects various information including website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and other similar details.
This gathered data might seem insignificant, however, it will contain personally identifiable details that are shared with third parties who can misuse them to generate revenue. Thus, having ScrollUP installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you are concerned with your privacy and browsing safety, uninstall ScrollUp immediately.
ScrollUp is regular adware, and thus, shares many similarities with other applications of the same type including BrowserAir, Fresh Outlook, Discover Treasure (just some examples from a long list).
All adware claims to enable various useful features, however, by giving fake promises, adware-type apps simply attempt to trick users to install. None provide the functionality promised. They simply display intrusive online advertisements and collect personal data to generate revenue for the developers.
How did ScrollUp install on my computer?
This PUP is free for anyone to download on its official promotion site, however, most users install this application inadvertently due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'. This method is used to distribute ScrollUp adware. Bundling is essentially stealth installation of third party software with regular software/apps.
Developers intentionally conceal applications such as ScrollUp within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, since they are aware that many users do not express enough caution during the download and installation processes. Users who skip the aforementioned settings often go on to install PUPs inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This situation can be prevented by closely analyzing each step of the software download and installation processes. Always perform these with the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings and opt-out of all bundled applications listed for download/installation.
Bear in mind that third party applications are often bogus, and therefore, you should never accept offers to download or install them. The key to computer safety is caution. Never rush the download or installation processes.
