Get-a-Clip Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Get-a-Clip?
Get-a-Clip is presented as an application that offers YouTube download functionality - "Get-a-Clip is a FREE Windows application, allowing you to seamlessly download videos from YouTube and extract audio in various formats." These false claims are used to trick users into believing that Get-a-Clip is a legitimate and useful app.
In fact, it is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that delivers intrusive online advertisements and continually monitors Internet browsing activity. Note that Get-a-Clip usually infiltrates systems without users' consent.
Get-a-Clip collects various information including website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and other similar data. Some users may believe that this information is insignificant, however, it may contain personally identifiable details that are later shared with third party companies.
Some of third parties will misuse the details to generate revenue. Thus, the presence of Get-a-Clip adware on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Furthermore, Get-a-Clip employs a 'virtual layer' to display various intrusive online advertisements including banners and pop-ups.
These, and other advertisements generated by this adware, may appear to be regular ads, however, none originate from the visited websites and conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience. In addition, some will redirect users to malicious sites.
Visiting websites that contain infectious content can lead to high-risk adware or malware infections. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that you uninstall Get-a-Clip adware immediately.
Get-a-Clip shares many similarities with other applications of the same type. In fact, adware-type applications in general are often identical. All offer various features simply to trick users to install.
Following system infiltration, however, applications such as Get-a-Clip merely display intrusive online advertisements and collect personal data. They are created to generate revenue for the developers and provide no real value for users.
How did Get-a-Clip install on my computer?
Get-a-Clip adware is available for anyone to download on its official website, however, most users install this application inadvertently without their consent. This is due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party software with regular software/apps).
Bundling is used to distribute Get-a-Clip adware. Research shows that many users are unaware that rogue applications are often hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' download/installation options. By rushing these processes and skipping this section, users install PUPs inadvertently and expose their systems to risk of further infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps you should take to prevent installation of adware-type applications. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - perform these processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options and closely analyze each step.
Secondly, ensure that only your chosen software is installed by opting-out of all third party applications listed for download/installation.
