StreamX Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is StreamX?
According to the developers, StreamX allows users to easily and efficiently play various online content (video, audio, etc.) - "StreamX - The latest in streaming technology. A new, cutting-edge solution kit which will make it easier for you to watch and listen to your favorite online content."
This add-on may seem useful, however, it infiltrates systems without users' permission, displays intrusive online advertisements, and tracks Internet browsing activity. Therefore, StreamX is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
StreamX monitors users' Internet browsing activity, recording Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar browsing-related information. Be aware that some of this collected information might contain personally identifiable details.
The developers share this collected data with third parties, with personal data being misused to generate revenue. Thus, the presence of StreamX adware on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
StreamX employs a virtual layer to display coupon, price comparison, pop-up, banner, and other similar advertisements that do not originate from the visited websites. These third party ads conceal underlying web content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience.
Furthermore, some redirect to malicious sites, and therefore, clicking them might cause high-risk adware or malware infections. For these reasons, you should uninstall StreamX adware immediately.
StreamX is a regular adware-type app with similar characteristics to tens of other applications such as StreamX, SmartPurple, FantasticDiscounts, HaggleDazzle, and Palmodeal, These also claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience by enabling certain features, and yet, these claims are false - they simply display advertisements and collect personally identifiable information.
Adware-type applications are created solely to generate revenue for the developers, providing no real value for users.
How did StreamX install on my computer?
Although StreamX is available for download on its official website, most users install this application inadvertently without their consent. The developers often distribute this application using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third party programs together with regular software/apps.
Bundled applications are commonly hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By not expressing enough caution when downloading and installing software, and skipping this section, users often install applications such as StreamX inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of adware-type applications can be prevented by taking two steps. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - choose the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings and closely analyze all steps within this section. Secondly, decline all offers to download or install additional applications, opting-out of any included.
