Palmodeal Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Palmodeal?
Palmodeal is supposedly a legitimate browser extension helping to save time and money when shopping online - "Our extension build for You.Build to help buy more things by the lowest prices.
Build to bring you enjoyment from shopping." Although this functionality may appear legitimate and useful, Palmodeal is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). The main reasons for these negative associations are: stealth installation, tracking of Internet browsing activity, and display of intrusive online advertisements.
These advertisements (for example, coupons, pop-ups, etc.) are displayed using a virtual layer, and none originate from the visited websites. Therefore, the presence of Palmodeal on your system significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience because the ads conceal underlying web content.
While most redirect to various e-commerce websites, some redirect to malicious sites containing 'exploit kits' and other infectious content - clicking these ads is risky and may lead to further computer infections.
In addition, Palmodeal gathers various information that may contain personally identifiable details including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geolocation), Internet service provider (ISP), browsing info (websites visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines [Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.]), and other collected data.
This information is later shared with third parties and can be misused to generate revenue. This practice of information tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you are worried with your privacy and Internet browsing safety, uninstall Palmodeal immediately.
Palmodeal Privacy Policy regarding information sharing:
By using our PALMODEAL services, you approve our sharing or transferring of information, including Personal Information, internally, within our group of companies. Non-Personal Information may be shared with third parties, in order to provide, maintain or improve our services and operation. Third parties can better provide you with offers you may be interested in.
Palmodeal is not the only application claiming to save time and money. FirstOffer, Up Pro, and FindsPro are other examples from a long list of apps offering identical features. Yet, these adware-type applications are created simply to generate revenue for the developers.
Rather than providing the functionality promised, Palmodeal (and other similar apps) display intrusive online advertisements (using the 'Pay Per Click' [PPC] advertising model) and gather personal information (which is later sold to third party companies).
How did Palmodeal install on my computer?
Adware-type applications are usually distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'. Palmodeal is no exception. The developers intentionally hide these applications within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings - they are aware that most users skip this section and rush download and installation.
By skipping most/all steps, users often install PUPs inadvertently. This behavior is equivalent to direct system exposure to infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
As mentioned, adware-type applications are usually hidden. Therefore, closely analyze all download and installation processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. In addition, never accept offers to install additional programs, since bundled programs are often rogue.
