Video Saver Ads

Also Known As: search.com and goinf.ru redirect
Type: Adware
Damage level: Medium

What is Video Saver?

Video Saver is supposedly a legitimate plug-in allowing users to download videos from the YouTube, Vkontakte, and Facebook websites - "Video Saver - free browser extension for download video from Vkonktakte, YouTube and Facebook!"

On initial inspection, Video Saver may appear similar or identical to other regular browser extensions, however, be aware that his plug-in is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).

After stealthily infiltrating Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Video Saver tracks Internet browsing activity, displays intrusive ads, and causes unwanted browser redirects.

Video Saver adware

When installing, Video Saver often assigns the web browser default search engine setting to search.com or goinf.ru. Furthermore, this application employs a virtual layer to display pop-up, banner, and other similar intrusive advertisements. Be aware that none of these ads originate from your visited websites.

By concealing underlying web content, they significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience. Most redirect to various e-commerce sites, however, some may redirect to infectious ones, and thus, clicking them is risky and may lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.

Video Saver continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity and collects various data that might be personally identifiable including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, search queries entered into search engines, websites visited, pages viewed, and other browsing-related information (some of which is shared with third party companies who can misuse the private details to generate revenue).

Thus, having Video Saver installed on your system might cause serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you are concerned with your privacy and Internet browsing safety, uninstall this PUP immediately.

Generally, all adware-type applications are similar. For example, Jogotempo, SmartPurple, and GreenPlayer also claim to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling a variety of useful features. In fact, their purpose is to generate revenue for the developers - false claims to provide useful functionality are merely attempts to trick users to install.

Following successful infiltration, these applications simply collect personally identifiable information (which is later shared with third parties to generate revenue) and deliver intrusive online advertisements (using the 'Pay Per Click [PPC] advertising model). Users receive no real value from this software.

How did Video Saver install on my computer?

Video Saver is commonly distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs with regular software/apps).

Therefore, most users install this application inadvertently. Many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software - they rush these processes unaware that bogus applications are concealed within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. This behavior often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Installation of adware-type applications such as Video Saver can be prevented by taking two steps. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - choose the 'Custom/Advanced' settings and closely analyze all steps. Secondly, decline all offers to download or install additional applications and opt-out of any listed - bundled applications are likely to be rogue.
