GreenPlayer Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is GreenPlayer?
GreenPlayer claims to be a legitimate lightweight media player supporting a number of useful features - "PLAYING MEDIA HAS NEVER BEEN SO EASY! All your entertainment needs in one convenient place."
Although many users may believe that this application is legitimate and useful, GreenPlayer is classed as a potentially unwanted adware-type program (PUP). This app is often distributed as a 'bundle' with other software. Promises to provide useful features are merely attempts to trick users to install - GreenPlayer generates advertisements and tracks Internet browsing activity.
GreenPlayer generates pop-up, promotion, and other similar intrusive online ads. To achieve this, developers employ a virtual layer, which enables placement of any graphical content on users' visited websites. Most users are unaware that none of these ads originate from their visited websites.
By concealing underlying content, these unwanted ads significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, some might redirect to bogus sites containing infectious content. Thus, clicking them is risky and may cause high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, GreenPlayer collects search queries entered into search engines, website URLs visited, pages viewed, activity on those pages (for example, clicks, etc.), Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), and other Internet browsing-related information.
This data might contain personally identifiable details that is later shared with third party companies (who misuse it to generate revenue). GreenPlayer poses a direct threat to your privacy (data misuse can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft), and hence, should be uninstalled immediately.
GreenPlayer shares many similarities with other adware-type applications that claim to enhance browsing, but in fact, collect private information.
Apps such as SwytShop, Sonic Train, Win Guard, and DelightfulDeals also promise to deliver useful functionality. In fact, none provide any real value for users. Adware-type apps generate revenue by displaying intrusive online advertisements and collecting personally identifiable information.
How did GreenPlayer install on my computer?
Although GreenPlayer is available for download on its official website, many users install this application inadvertently without their consent. Developers employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of PUPs with regular software/apps) to distribute GreenPlayer.
Many users are unaware that applications such as GreenPlayer are hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings - they rush the download/installation processes and skip most/all steps. This behavior often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent installation of rogue applications, be attentive when downloading and installing software. Select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings and closely analyze all steps. Be aware that PUPs must be cancelled, however, they are often hidden. Therefore, by following each step you will be able to cancel them and go on to safely download and install your chosen software.
