iVIDI Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is iVIDI?
iVIDI is a deceptive browser extension claiming to provide various features (depending on users' geographic locations) to supposedly improve the Internet browsing experience.
The functionality offered may trick some users into believing that this application is legitimate and useful, however, iVIDI is a regular adware-type plug-in categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). There are a number of reasons for these negative associations.
Firstly, this app often infiltrates systems without users' permission. Furthermore, after successful infiltration, it iVIDI displays intrusive online ads (usually marked as 'brought by iVIDI') and collects various user/system information.
Some users may be unaware that the displayed advertisements (banners, coupons, pop-ups, etc.) do not originate from the visited sites. iVIDI employs a virtual layer, which allows placement of any graphical content on websites visited. These ads hide underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, some ads may redirect to rogue sites containing infectious content, and therefore, clicking them can result in high-risk adware or malware infections. Applications such as iVIDI monitor Internet browsing activity and collect various information that might be personally identifiable.
This information can be shared with third parties and misused to generate revenue - behavior that can lead to various privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that you uninstall iVIDI immediately.
iVIDI is a regular adware-type app and there are hundreds of other PUPs with similar characteristics. For example, SaveNewaAppz, SnapSearch, LolliScan, and Skyrocket Player also claim to enhance Internet browsing by enabling various useful features, however, these applications deliver fake promises simply to give the impression of legitimacy.
Neither iVIDI, nor any other adware-type apps, provide any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by displaying intrusive online advertisements and collecting various user/system information.
How did iVIDI install on my computer?
iVIDI is distributed using fake torrent download buttons. Many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software. By rushing these processes and skipping most of the steps, they inadvertently install third party applications classed as adware or malware.
