What is LolliScan?
LolliScan is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that installs on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'.
Bundling is a way to stealthily distribute applications together with other software, and therefore, most infections are caused by careless download and installation of free software from freeware download websites. After successful infiltration, LolliScan generates intrusive online advertisements such as banner, pop-up, in-text, and other similar ads.
There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will cause high-risk adware or malware infections.
Additionally, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since LolliScan collects various software and hardware information including browser type and data (cookies, URLs visited, pages viewed, and search queries), IP addresses, operating system, language, time zone, geographic location, and other details that may be personally identifiable.
This information tracking may lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. There are many applications similar to LolliScan.
For example: FlashBeat, Shop and Save Up, and S5Mark. None of these (including LolliScan) provide any significant value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements and sharing collected data with third parties. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall LolliScan from your system.
Research shows that most adware is distributed using small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com. Download managers are employed to monetize these websites' traffic and free services by offering installation of additional programs together with the chosen free software.
Although it is stated that these applications are '100% legitimate and virus-free', reckless download and installation of freeware risks computer infection with adware or malware. To avoid installation of LolliScan, or other similar adware, be attentive during the free software download process and click 'Decline' when installation of any additional programs if offered.
Furthermore, installation of downloaded software should be performed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' options - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. If you have installed LolliScan, follow this guide to eliminate the software and related adware from your system.
