What is Twinkle Star?
Developed by SuperWeb LLC, Twinkle Star is a deceptive application claiming to provide users with coupons, comparison shopping, and other similar functionality - "We're passionate about improving web by providing the best tools to enhance the browsing experience, from searching the web to comparing online deals to find the best prices. We've combined all of our great ideas into the Twinkle Star product suite, a FREE set of tools that work to make your browsing experience... better!"
These claims can trick some users into believing that Twinkle Star is a legitimate and useful browser plug-in - these are, however, false, since this add-on is categorized as a potentially unwanted (PUP) and adware. Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Twinkle displays intrusive online advertisements and collects various system information.
The developers of this application employ a virtual layer to display so-called banner, pop-up, interstitial, transitional, search, and other similar ads. These ads may seem harmless, however, they can redirect to rogue websites - clicking them can lead to high-risk computer infections.
In addition, displayed ads diminish the Internet browsing experience, since most content on visited websites is concealed and users must continually avoid clicking ads.
Twinkle Star also collects various system/user information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines (for example, Bing, Google, Yahoo), and other similar details.
Although Twinkle Star claims that the collected data is not personally identifiable, the aforementioned data types can certainly contain private details and these may be shared with third parties and misused to generate revenue.
Therefore, the presence of Twinkle Star adware on your system can lead to serious privacy issues. To eliminate these threats, uninstall Twinkle Star immediately.
Twinkle Star Privacy Policy statement regarding data collection:
We only share or sell your non-public personal information with non-affiliated third parties when we believe doing so is permitted by you or authorized by this Privacy Policy. In addition, the Company may share your personal information with our parent, subsidiary or affiliate companies without restriction.
SuperWeb LLC has released hundreds of potentially unwanted programs identical to Twinkle Star. For instance, plug-ins such as Blazzer Deals, Happy Cloud, Computer Pal, and BetterBrowse also claim to provide identical features. Neither Twinkle Star, nor any other add-ons developed by this company, deliver the features promised.
Extensions developed by SuperWeb LLC are designed to generate revenue by displaying intrusive online advertisements and collecting personally identifiable information. They provide no real value for the user.
How did Twinkle Star install on my computer?
As with all other app SuperWeb LLC products, Twinkle Star is distributed using the 'bundling' method - stealth installation of additional programs with the chosen software.
Research shows that most users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software, and since the developers of bogus apps are aware of this, they intentionally conceal installation of applications such as Twinkle Star within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.
Unaware that potentially unwanted programs are hidden, users often skip these sections, thereby inadvertently installing bogus applications.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Express caution when downloading and installing software. Each step of the download procedure should be closely analyzed and all third party applications, cancelled. In addition, installation should be performed with the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any potentially unwanted apps and enable you to opt-out.
