Magic Ball Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Magic Ball?
Magic Ball is a dubious browser plug-in described as a great tool to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling comparison shopping, coupons, and other features. Some users may find this add-on legitimate and useful, however, it is classed as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
These negative associations are made due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party applications together with the chosen software) employed by the developers of this plug-in.
Magic Ball installs on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox and then generates intrusive online advertisements such as banner, pop-up, coupons, search, interstitial, transitional, and full-page ads. Advertisements generated by Magic Ball may redirect you to rogue websites, and therefore, expose your computer to further adware or malware infections.
As with other applications developed by SuperWeb LLC, Magic Ball tracks and collects various software and hardware information including, for instance, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered, unique identifier numbers, and so on.
This recorded information may be personally identifiable, and therefore, the presence of bogus applications such as Magic Ball may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft. Information Cloud, First Color, Coupons Free, and Checked List are just some examples of rogue plug-ins developed by SuperWeb LLC.
This company releases identical plug-ins under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-virus and anti-spyware suites.
None of these aforementioned apps (including Magic Ball) provide any real value for the user - their aim is to generate revenue by sharing collected data with third parties and displaying intrusive online advertisements. Therefore, you are strongly advised to remove Magic Ball from your system immediately.
Since Magic Ball is a regular adware application, it is mostly distributed via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com.
Download managers are employed by these sites to monetize their traffic and free software by offering installation of additional programs together with the chosen software - or simply by concealing them under the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options. These applications are described as '100% legitimate and virus-free', however, most are classed as adware or malware.
Installation of PUPs can be avoided by closely observing each step during download of free software and ensuring that no additional applications are included.
Further, downloaded free software should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options - this will reveal any third party apps listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If you have installed Magic Ball, follow the instructions below to uninstall this adware from your system.
