Follow Rules Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Follow Rules?
Follow Rules is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) developed by SuperWeb LLC. Although this browser plug-in claims to enhance users' Internet browsing experience by enabling various features such as comparison shopping and coupons, it is categorized as adware or a PUP.
Follow Rules installs on Internet browsers using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', which allows infiltration during installation of other software.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, various intrusive online advertisements such as search, pop-up, interstitial, transitional and banner ads are generated. It is highly probable that clicking these advertisements will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
Additionally, Follow Rules adware tracks users' Internet browsing activity by collecting various software and hardware information that may be personally identifiable. For example: IP addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), unique identifier numbers, URLs visited, search queries, pages viewed, and other details.
This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft. There are many rogue applications developed by SuperWeb LLC that are identical to Follow Rules. Examples include Clock Hand, Internet Program, and ZoomCheck.
None of these are useful to the user - the developers release identical browser extensions under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus suites.
The aim is of these applications is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected data with third parties. Therefore, you are strongly advised to uninstall Follow Rules from your system.
Research shows that most adware is distributed via small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, and soft32.com.
Download clients are used to monetize these websites' free services and traffic by offering installation of additional (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware risks computer infection with adware or malware.
To avoid installation of Follow Rules, or other similar adware, closely inspect each step of the free software download process and click 'Decline' if installation of any additional programs is offered.
Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Quick', 'Typical', or 'Regular' - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
If you have installed Follow rules, and you observe intrusive online ads when browsing the Internet, read the removal instructions provided and uninstall this potentially unwanted program from your Internet browsers.
