What is dollarkeeper?
Dollarkeeper is a rogue browser plug-in that claims to save time and money by displaying special deals/discounts available on shopping websites and by enabling discounts and comparison shopping. While this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that Dollarkeeper is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Dollarkeeper installs on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) during download of free applications from freeware download websites or via fake software updates.
Following successful infiltration, dollarkeeper generates intrusive online advertisements such as banner, pop-up, coupon, and price comparison ads. Although most of the generated advertisements simply lead to the Advertising Support website, there is a chance that this plug-in will cause high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since dollarkeeper records various software and hardware information that may be personally identifiable. This collected information includes IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered, and other similar data.
This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft. Dollarkeeper is similar to other potentially unwanted applications that employ bundling as an installation method. UniSales, PriceLess, and Deals Finder are just some examples among many others.
Neither dollarkeeper, nor any of these other plug-ins, provide any significant value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected data with third parties. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall dollarkeeper from your Internet browsers.
Research shows that most adware is distributed via small download programs (called 'download managers', 'installers', 'download clients', etc.) used by freeware download websites such as softonic.com, soft32.com, and download.com in order to monetize their free services.
Download programs offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser add-ons together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware frequently leads to adware or malware infections.
To avoid these situations, closely inspect each step of the free software download procedure and click 'Decline' if installation of any other applications is offered.
Additionally, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any concealed applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If you have installed dollarkeeper, and you observe intrusive online advertisements while surfing the Internet, follow this removal guide to remove this potentially unwanted program.
