What is Coupon Marvel?
Coupon Marvel is a rogue browser extension claiming to save time and money by enabling comparison shopping, coupons, and displaying special deals/discounts available on shopping websites. On initial inspection, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that Coupon Marvel is considered to be adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
This rogue application employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome) without users' permission.
Bundling allows developers to stealthily distribute their applications together with other software, and therefore, most users infect their computers with Coupon Marvel during download of free software from freeware download websites.
After successful infiltration on the aforementioned browsers, Coupon Marvel generates numerous intrusive online advertisements such as banner, coupon, in-text, transitional, and interstitial ads. It is highly probable that clicking advertisements generated by Coupon Marvel will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since Coupon Marvel collects various software and hardware information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), unique identifier numbers, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.), and other similar details that may be personally identifiable.
This information tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Coupon Marvel is similar to other PUPs that use bundling as an installation method. Examples include TidyNetwork, Surf To Save, and Shop for Rewards among many others.
These applications provide little or no value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads, enforcing unwanted browser redirects, and sharing collected information with third parties. Therefore, Internet users are strongly advised to uninstall Coupon Marvel adware from their Internet browsers.
At time of research, Coupon Marvel was mostly distributed via small download programs (called 'installers', 'download clients', 'download managers', etc.) used by freeware download websites such as softonic.com, soft32.com, download.com, and many others.
Download programs are used by these websites as free services and traffic monetization tools, since they offer installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% virus-free') browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often leads to high-risk adware or malware infections.
To prevent installation of Coupon Marvel, or other similar PUPs, be attentive when downloading free software and never accept installation of any additional programs offered.
Furthermore, if you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If your computer is infected with Coupon Marvel, and you experience intrusive online ads while surfing the Internet, follow the removal instructions provided to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
