What is WordExtra?
WordExtra is a rogue browser extension claiming to facilitate the search of word meanings.
Although such functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that WordExtra is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP) since it employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional applications together with the chosen software) to install on Internet browsers without users' permission.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, WordExtra generates numerous intrusive online advertisements including banner, coupon, in-text, and other similar ads. There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will cause high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, WordExtra continually tracks users' Internet browsing activity by collecting various software and hardware information that is likely to be personally identifiable. For example: Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, website URLs visited, search queries entered, pages viewed, and other details.
This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or identity theft. WordExtra is similar to other potentially unwanted programs that employ bundling as an installation method. Examples include PriceLess, CloudGuard, TopBuyer, and Boost among many others.
These applications provide little or no value to the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads or enforcing unwanted browser redirects. For these reasons you are strongly advised to eliminate WordExtra from your Internet browsers.
Research shows that most adware is distributed via small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as soft32.com, download.com, and softonic.com.
Download clients are used to monetize these websites' free services and traffic by offering installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate') browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
Installation of WordExtra, or other similar adware, can be prevented by closely studying each step of the free software download procedure and declining any offers to install additional programs.
In addition, if you are installing downloaded software, be sure to select the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, since this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If you have installed WordExtra, and you experience intrusive online advertisements when surfing the Internet, read the removal instructions provided to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
