What is Comet Arcade?
Comet Arcade is a rogue browser extension claiming to enable users to play an addictive game called 'Asteroids'. This browser extension is compatible with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome.
The developers (Acute Angle Solutions) employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to stealth-install additional applications together with the chosen software without users' permission.
Although this browser extension may appear legitimate and useful, be aware that Comet Arcade is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) or adware. Following stealth installation, Comet Arcade tracks users' Internet browsing activity and generates intrusive online advertisements.
These intrusive advertisements include banner, pop-up/under, interstitial, and in-text ads - clicking on these may cause high-risk adware or malware infections. In addition, Comet Arcade monitors users' Internet browsing by collecting various software and hardware information that is likely to be personally identifiable.
Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, operating system (type, version, CPU type), unique identifier numbers, browser type, search queries entered, website URLs visited, pages viewed, geographic locations, and system language settings are just a few examples of the type of information recorded by Comet Arcade.
This behavior often results in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Comet Arcade is similar to other potentially unwanted programs such as Jumpy Bird, Jewel Quest, Sudoku, Pac-Man, etc.
Neither Comet Arcade, nor any of these other browser plug-ins, add any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements. Therefore, Internet users are strongly advised to uninstall Comet Arcade from their Internet browsers.
Most users infect their computers with Comet Arcade during download of free software via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as softonic.com, soft32.com, download.com, and many others.
Download managers are used by these websites as a free service monetization tool, since they offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate') browser add-ons together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware frequently results in adware or malware infections.
Users can protect their computers from Comet Arcade, and other similar infections, by paying close attention when downloading free software and never accepting installation of any additional programs offered.
Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If you have already infected your computer with Comet Arcade, and observe intrusive online advertisements while surfing the Internet, follow this removal guide to uninstall this extension from your Internet browsers.
