Removing Easy Search browser hijacker and the redirects it causes
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Easy Search?
Easy Search is the name of a rogue browser extension, which we have recently discovered. Our researchers have determined this dubious piece of software to be a browser hijacker, promoting the blpsearch.com fake search engine.
Easy Search browser hijacker overview
After being installed onto our test system, the Easy Search browser extension caused redirects to blpsearch.com when new browser tabs/windows were opened, and search queries were typed into the URL bar. Browser hijackers achieve such by setting these search engines (e.g., blpsearch.com) as browsers' default, and also their homepage and new tab/window URLs.
Fake search engines usually cannot provide search results and redirect to legitimate ones. This is also true of blpsearch.com, as it redirects to Yahoo (it may lead elsewhere since that might be determined by specific factors like the user's geolocation).
Hijacker software typically uses persistence-ensuring methods to prevent browser recovery. What is more, Easy Search has data tracking abilities.
From our research into browser hijackers, we can conclude that they usually target browsing and search engine histories, personally identifiable details, log-in credentials, and finance-related data. The collected data is monetized by being shared with and/or sold to third-parties.
Therefore, the presence of software like Easy Search on devices can result in severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Browser hijacker examples
Best Darker, Shiny Tab, and CoolMapSearch are a couple examples of the browser hijackers we have analyzed. They look genuine and useful yet seldom operate as advertised. To elaborate, whatever features browser hijackers promise (e.g., improved browsing experience, easy access to online content, file format conversion, etc.) rarely work as promised, and in most cases - they do not work at all.
How did Easy Search install on my computer?
We discovered Easy Search when researching rogue advertising networks used by untrustworthy sites. However, browser hijacker developers use various techniques to distribute their products. "Official" download pages for this software may also be accessed via mistyped URLs or redirects caused by spam browser notifications/ intrusive adverts or installed adware.
"Bundling" (packing regular programs with unwanted/malicious additions) is also used to proliferate browser hijackers. Download from untrustworthy channels and rushed installations increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive advertisements are used in distribution as well. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to make stealthy downloads/installations.
How to avoid installation of browser hijackers?
Our researchers highly recommended downloading only from official/verified sources, since unofficial and freeware websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - are known to promote harmful content.
We also advise reading terms, studying possible options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting-out of all additions - when downloading/installing.
We must emphasize the importance of exercising caution when browsing. Questionable sites and intrusive ads/notifications appear legitimate, yet they redirect to untrustworthy and unreliable websites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
Should you experience such ads and/or redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Easy Search, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
