How to remove the TopSearchStreams browser hijacker?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What is TopSearchStreams?
TopSearchStreams is a browser hijacker promoting the topsearchstreams.com search engine. It makes changes to browser settings to promote its web searcher. Additionally, TopSearchStreams likely has data tracking abilities. Since most users download/install browser hijacker unintentionally, they are also classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).
TopSearchStreams browser hijacker in detail
Browser hijackers reassign browsers' default search engine, new tab/window, and homepage URLs - to fake web searcher addresses. TopSearchStreams modifies browsers in this manner as well. Hence, with it installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to topsearchstreams.com.
Illegitimate search engines typically cannot provide search results, so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Yahoo, Bing, Google, and other genuine ones. At the time of research, topsearchstreams.com redirected both to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) and the searchlee.com fake web searcher (possibly others). While searchlee.com can generate search results, they are inaccurate and may endorse untrustworthy/malicious content.
Browser hijackers can undo any changes users try to make to their browsers. Alternatively, they can restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, restoring a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it.
What is more, most browser hijackers have data tracking abilities. They record browsing activity (URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect sensitive information extracted from it (IP addresses/ geolocations, personally identifiable details, etc.). The collected data is shared with and/or sold to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. To ensure device and user safety, it is crucial to remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

Browser hijackers in general
SmartSportSearch, Music Search for Chrome, WebSearchSport, and SearchConvertersBox are some examples of browser hijackers. They appear legitimate and offer various "useful" functionalities. However, the advertised functions are usually nonoperational.
Nearly all PUAs lure users into download/installation with nonexistent features. The sole purpose of unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers. PUAs are designed to hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private and vulnerable infromation.
How did TopSearchStreams install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed via download/installation setups of other programs. This false marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g., used pre-set options, etc.) increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive advertisements are used to proliferate PUAs as well. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to stealthily download/install these applications. Some PUAs can have "official" promotional webpages from which they can be downloaded and/or purchased.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to research software before download/installation. Additionally, all downloads must be performed from official and verified sources. Untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and freeware websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer harmful content.
When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, study possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from additional apps, tools, etc. Intrusive advertisements appear legitimate; however, they redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, adult-dating, pornography, and so forth).
In case of encounters with such adverts and/or redirects, the system must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with TopSearchStreams, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
