How to remove the ValidManager adware from your operating system?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is ValidManager?
ValidManager is an adware-type application with browser hijacker traits. It operates by running intrusive advertisement campaigns and modifying browser settings - to promote fake search engines. Additionally, ValidManager may have data tracking abilities.
Since most users inadvertently download/install adware and browser hijackers, they are also categorized as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications). One of the commonly used distribution methods is proliferation via fake Adobe Flash Player updates. Fraudulent updaters/installers spread not only PUAs but malware as well.
ValidManager adware in detail
Adware enables the placement of third-party graphical content on any visited website and/or different interfaces. This software can deliver pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, and other intrusive advertisements. They severely diminish the browsing quality as they diminish the browsing speed and webpage visibility.
Furthermore, intrusive adverts pose a threat to device and user safety. These ads endorse various rogue, untrustworthy, deceptive/scam, and even malicious websites. What is more, once clicked on, some intrusive advertisements can stealthily download/install software (e.g., PUAs).
Browser hijackers reassign browsers' homepage, new tab/window, fake search engine URLs - to fake web searcher addresses. Hence, with this piece of software installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to the promoted address.
Fraudulent search engines are seldom able to provide search results, so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other legitimate ones. Browser hijackers can reset any changes users try to make to their browsers and/or restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, restoring a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it.
Most PUAs (adware and browser hijacker included) have data tracking abilities. Information of interest includes: URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, IP addresses, personally identifiable details, and so forth. PUA developers then share and/or sell the gathered data to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, the presence of unwanted apps on devices can lead to system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. To ensure device and user safety, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated without delay.

Adware in general
AdminRemote, MainSearchBoard, AccessDefault, and WebBoostSeach are some examples of adware-type apps. They appear legitimate and harmless. This software also offers "handy" functionalities. However, the promised features are rarely operational.
In fact, nearly all PUAs use fake functions to entice users into download/installation. The only goal of unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers; hence, functionality and user safety are irrelevant. PUAs are designed to run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects, and collect private data.
How did ValidManager install on my computer?
PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other software. This false marketing technique of packing regular programs with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". Rushed downloads/installations (e.g., skipped steps, used pre-set options, etc.) increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the device.
Intrusive advertisements are used to proliferate PUAs as well. Upon being clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user permission. Select PUAs have "official" promotional sites from which they can be downloaded and/or purchased.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is advised to research software before download/installation and/or purchase. Only official and verified download sources must be used. Untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer harmful and bundled content.
When downloading/installing, it is recommended to read terms, study possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive advertisements appear legitimate; however, they redirect to highly questionable websites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on).
In case of encounters with such ads and/or redirects, the system must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with ValidManager, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
