How to uninstall the AdminRemote adware from your operating system?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is AdminRemote?
AdminRemote is a rogue application categorized as adware. It also has browser hijacker traits. This app is designed to run intrusive ad campaigns and modify browser settings to promote fraudulent search engines. AdminRemote likely has data tracking abilities as well.
Due to the dubious methods used to spread adware and browser hijackers, they are also classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications). One of the most common distribution techniques is proliferation via fake Adobe Flash Player updates. Fraudulent updaters are known to proliferate PUAs and malware (e.g., trojans, ransomware, etc.).
AdminRemote adware in detail
Adware can display various pop-ups, banners, surveys, coupons, and other intrusive adverts. This third-party graphical content is placed on any visited website and/or different interfaces. These ads diminish the browsing experience by slowing down the browsing speed and webpage visibility.
Furthermore, intrusive advertisements endanger device and user safety. They endorse a variety of untrustworthy, deceptive/scam, and malicious sites. What is more, some of these adverts can be triggered (by being clicked on) to stealthily download/install software (e.g., PUAs).
Browser hijackers assign fake web searcher addresses as browsers' homepage, new tab/window, and default search engine URLs. Hence, with such a piece of software installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to the promoted address.
Fake search engines typically cannot generate search results, so they redirect to Yahoo, Bing, Google, and other genuine ones. Browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to the browser settings, and/or they can undo any permitted changes made. Therefore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removing the software hijacking it.
PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) usually have data tracking functionalities. This software collects: browsing and search engine histories, IP addresses/ geolocations, personally identifiable details, and so forth. The gathered data is then monetized by being shared with and/or sold to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of unwanted apps on devices can lead to system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. It is highly recommended to remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

Adware in general
MainSearchBoard, WebBoostSeach, CharacterSearch, and ConfigAccess are some examples of adware-type apps. They appear ordinary and harmless. Users are enticed into download/installation with promises of "handy" features. However, the functions are seldom operational.
In fact, practically all PUAs advertise fake functionalities. The only goal of unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers; it has no real value to users. Therefore, PUAs can run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects, and gather private data - instead of delivering on any promises.
How did AdminRemote install on my computer?
PUAs are spread via downloaders/installers of other products. This false marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". Rushed downloads/installations (e.g., ignored terms, skipped steps, etc.) increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the device.
Intrusive advertisements are used to distribute PUAs as well. Upon being clicked on, the adverts can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user permission. Some PUAs can also have "official" promotional sites from which they can be downloaded and/or purchased.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is advised to research products before download/installation and/or purchase. Furthermore, all downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and freeware websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer bundled and harmful content.
Download and installation processes must be approached with caution; that entails - reading terms, studying available options, using "Custom/Advanced" settings to opt-out from additional apps, tools, etc. Intrusive ads appear legitimate; however, they redirect to dubious websites (e.g., gambling, adult-dating, pornography, and so on).
In case of encounters with such adverts and/or redirects, the device must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with AdminRemote, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
